Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins announced today that two Swiftwater Rescue Teams consisting of eight Swiftwater Technicians and two boats, deployed this morning to Colleton County, SC after receiving a request from South Carolina State Firefighter Mobilization.  Their assignment will be to assist with any potential water rescues.  Additionally, Columbia Fire has plans in the ready to have additional staffing report to stations to staff reserve apparatus and the deployment of Swiftwater boat teams.

On Thursday morning Midlands MMRS (Metropolitan Medical Response System) MERV (Mass Evacuation Response Vehicle) supported by members of the Columbia Fire Department responded at the request of SC DHEC to a medical rehabilitation facility in Hanahan, SC.  The team assisted other agencies with transfer of 19 patients to a sister facility located in Columbia, SC.

In collaboration with local and state agencies through SC Firefighter Mobilization the Columbia Fire Department is prepared to support a request under SC-TF5 Collapse Search/Rescue Team with 20 Structural Collapse Technicians with various apparatus.

Chief Jenkins reminds citizens that the state’s lane reversal operations on I-26 will terminate this afternoon and will return to normal operations; once that begins the Columbia Fire Department will demobilize the remaining two interstate task force teams that have been providing emergency responses to any situation along the evacuation routes in our jurisdiction for the last 48 hours.

As always, the Columbia Fire Department is maintaining its normal response for service.
